Studio Workshops

Learn to throw on the wheel in my Portland studio. Half-day and full-day sessions for beginners and experienced potters. Small groups, personal instruction, all materials included.

The commission process

From conversation to kiln to your table

Week 1

Conversation

We start with a call or email. Tell me what you need, how you will use it, what colors and forms speak to you. I will share glaze samples and past work that might inspire direction.

Week 1-2

Proposal & deposit

I send a detailed proposal with pricing, timeline, and glaze options. A 50% deposit secures your place in the studio schedule. The balance is due before shipping.

Weeks 3-6

Making

Your pieces are thrown on the wheel, trimmed, dried slowly, bisque fired, glazed by hand, and glaze fired to 2300°F. I send progress photos along the way.

Week 7-8

Approval & shipping

Once finished, I photograph the work and send images for your approval. Pieces are carefully wrapped in custom packaging designed for ceramics and shipped with insurance.

Half-day workshop

Three hours at the wheel. I teach you to center, open, and pull up the walls of a simple form. You will leave with 2-3 pieces that I will bisque fire, glaze, and ship to you after the final firing. Includes all materials, studio time, and a warm drink. $150 per person · Max 4 students · Saturdays 9am-12pm

Full-day intensive

A deep dive into wheel throwing, trimming, and glaze application. Morning at the wheel, afternoon exploring surface techniques. Lunch provided from a local cafe. You will finish with 4-6 pieces and a real understanding of the ceramic process. $350 per person · Max 3 students · Select Sundays

Common questions about services

Most commissions take 6-8 weeks from deposit to delivery. This includes consultation, making, drying, two firings, and shipping. Larger orders (20+ pieces) may take 10-12 weeks. Rush orders are sometimes possible for an additional fee.

I work with restaurants and retailers starting at 20 pieces per order. For ongoing relationships, we establish a schedule that works for your needs. I can maintain consistency in form and glaze across large orders while keeping the handmade character.

Yes, within the range of my current glaze palette. I have about 15 signature glazes developed over years of testing. I will send physical samples or detailed photos so you can choose with confidence. Custom glaze development is available for large commissions.

None at all. The half-day workshop is designed for complete beginners. If you have experience and want to refine technique, the full-day intensive offers more depth. I adjust instruction to meet you where you are.

I send progress photos and final images before shipping. If something does not meet your expectations, I will remake it. This has happened twice in fifteen years. I stand behind my work completely.
